CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC WITH AN ANCIENT TWIST

Joanna Mazurek graduated from the Ceramic and Painting Department of the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Since her graduation she had exhibited her work in solo and group shows, in the United States, Canada, Belgium, Japan and Poland.  Her artwork is in many private collections.

“My ceramic pieces are hand built, mostly pinched and coil built. I like soft organic form, movement and texture. It is all about simple, often classical, primitive forms and texture.

I make pots in a way that shows the marks of my hands and the tools I use. I like the hardy, ancient feel and rustic appearance of my pottery. I create functional pieces. However, when I make them, I don’t think about their function, but about an expression and feeling. For me handmade pots are art. My favorite clay is raku, speckled red and red earthenware.

All of my pieces are one of a kind. Irregular textures, marks of the hands and fingers are a unique part of my creation.
